NEW ORLEANS – Led by a 2-under 70 from senior
Baker Stevenson, the Nicholls State University men's golf team shot a 289 in the opening round Monday in the Battle in the Big Easy at the English Turn Country Club, putting the Colonels seven strokes off the lead.
The seven-team field was scheduled for 36 holes Monday, but severe weather in the area caused a delay after just two holes in the second round. The rest of Monday's action was later canceled and play for the final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Southeastern Louisiana posted the top team score at 282, and was followed by New Orleans (284) and UIW (286). Nicholls holds a five-stroke advantage for fourth over Prairie View A&M.
Stevenson finished tied for second on the individual leaderboard, helped by four birdies on the day. Three came on the front 9 as he carded a 3-under. He had a par and two bogeys on the back to end Monday two strokes behind New Orleans' Ulisses de Toledo, Jr., who had a 4-under 68.
Jack Lee and
Connor Campbell were just outside the top 10 at 11th with even 72s. Campbell eagled hole 2 and sank a birdie on 16, but lost two strokes on 18. Lee was consistent through 18 holes of play, totaling two birdies, two bogeys, and the rest pars.
Freshman
Loic Maigret had a team best five birdies, but a triple bogey on 17 put him at 3-over 75 for the round.
Liam Bryden shot a 76 and had a birdie on 1.
