SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to UIW Friday evening in its Southland Conference opener at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
The Colonels (2-6, 0-1 SLC) managed nine shots including four on goal. Senior
Francesca Curteis successfully converted a penalty kick with 33 seconds to play in the match after goalkeeper Sydney Huntsinger received a red card. Junior
Elisabet Gunnthorsdottir finished with two shots, one on frame. Redshirt sophomore
Jade Gallaher totaled a season-high six saves.
The Cardinals (1-5, 1-0 SLC) got on the board in the 20th minute when Taylor Husfeld buried a pass from Ari Cantu. UIW increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 46th minute as Jade Piper beat Gallaher in a one-on-one situation.
Nicholls concludes its two-match road swing Sunday at Abilene Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
