THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team surrendered an 86th-minute goal Sunday that resulted in a 2-1 defeat to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
The game-winner was off the foot of Dana Curtis, who received a lovely cross from Shayla Spearman for her first score of the season. This was after senior
Haylee Atwell struck the equalizer in the 65th minute. The Islanders (5-3-2, 2-1-1 SLC) used an Abby Deakin penalty kick in the 46th minute to commence the scoring. All three goals were scored in the second half.
A&M Corpus Christi outshot Nicholls (2-7, 0-2 SLC) 19-6. Deakin, Kayla Gove, Reaghan Lang and Addison Urbanus contributed three attempts apiece. Redshirt sophomore
Jade Gallaher tallied seven saves in goal, marking her third straight contest with at least six rejections. Atwell fired two shots while juniors
Elisabet Gunnthorsdottir and
Kristy Helmers added one shot on target.
The Colonels face Houston Baptist Monday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex. Kickoff time is scheduled for noon.
