BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Nicholls State University women's indoor track and field team had several standout performances Friday and Saturday at the Samford Invite, which was held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"We had a great season opener," Nicholls head coach
Stefanie Slekis said. "There were several performance highlights and a lot of learning opportunities. We have a very young team so to come out and compete well and see how much potential we have if we work on a few things in practice over the next two weeks before we compete at LSU is a great start for our women's team.
"I'm excited to get our men's team out at practice Monday and see the progression for our women from this opener to both of our teams competing at LSU on Feb. 1."
Freshman
Troynae Walker already etched her name into the Colonels indoor record book, ranking seventh all-time in the high jump (4-11) and 10th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.58). Walker and senior
Lakeisha Taylor qualified for the semifinals in the 60m hurdles.
Junior
Maerys Joseph ran her fastest indoor 400m season opener by 2.5 seconds, placing sixth on a 58.36, which is .2 seconds off her indoor personal best. That time ranks ninth in the Southland Conference.

Julia Garcia Verges (2:30.13) placed sixth and 12th, respectively, in the 800m. Freshman
Lara Reifers (11:06.79) finished 11th in the 3000m. The women's 4x400m relay squad of Joseph, Scull, and freshmen
