THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's and men's tennis teams notched their first victories of the season in a doubleheader sweep of Prairie View A&M Saturday at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
The women (1-2) earned a 4-0 shutout while the men (1-5) battled back from a loss in doubles to win 5-2.
"We earned two quality wins today against players who fought hard," Nicholls tennis head coach
Greg Harkins said. "We look forward to building on the weekend success at practice next week to continue improving."
The women jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins on the No. 2 and 3 courts in doubles. In singles,
Antonia Roessli continued her strong play with a 6-2, 6-1 win and Mariia Kozochok won in straight sets at No. 6. Senior
Stephanie Barnett closed out the match with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win on the top court.
On the men's side, the Colonels quickly erased the 1-0 deficit with straight-set victories by
Tobias Lentz and
Dylan Loru at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Freshman
Moritz Borges secured a shutout in his second set to make it 3-1 and
Alvaro Barranco Vilaltella clinched the point with a victory on Line 6.
Prairie View took Court 4 before Oleksander Podgursky made the final with a 10-8 win in the super tiebreaker on No. 1.
UP NEXT
Both squads are back in action at home next Saturday, Feb. 16, against Jackson State. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
