BATON ROUGE, La. - Nicholls State University first baseman
Adam Tarver hit a pair of solo home runs against No. 7 LSU, including the go-ahead shot in the ninth, but the Tigers rallied to tie the game before winning in the 10th, 5-4, Wednesday night at Alex Box Stadium.
Nicholls (11-11) had three homers on the night, with
Dillon Belle adding the first of his season on a solo bomb in the sixth. It came right after LSU (16-5) erased a 2-0 deficit in the fifth thanks to a pair of unearned runs.
Following Belle's home run, LSU evened the score up again at 3-3 with an RBI single by Hal Hughes in the seventh.
Leading off the ninth, Tarver, a native of Baton Rouge, took the first pitch he saw from Todd Peterson and launched it over the left field wall for a 4-3 lead. Nicholls then brought in its Saturday starter
Jacob Bedevian to pick up the save, but he allowed a two-out RBI double to Chris Reid that sent the game into extra innings.
In the 10th, LSU's Antoine Duplantis walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before Daniel Cabrera ended the game with a walk-off double.
Nicholls used nine pitchers in the midweek matchup, with
Parker White getting the start. He was perfect through three before allowing two base hits in the fourth.
Austin Bollinger was tagged with the loss after pitching the 10th.
The Colonels had eight hits, led by the two homers from Tarver.
Austin France doubled in a run in the first inning of the game.
