FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University graduate transfer Jeremiah Jefferson added another honor to his resume as the sharp-shooting guard was named to the Southland Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic First Team, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
A native of Dallas, Jefferson was an automatic selection after earning CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors earlier this year. The Southland 10-member teams had four automatic selections.
Jefferson posted a 3.84 grade-point average in urban studies at Jackson State University before coming to Thibodaux and has a perfect 4.0 GPA as a master's candidate in higher education leadership at Nicholls.
In his only season with the Colonels, Jefferson ranked fourth in the Southland with 17.3 points per game. He scored at least 20 points in 13 games, including the final five of the season. He had a season-high 31 points in a win over Mobile.
Jefferson had the best single season of any Colonel all-time behind the 3-point line, setting a new record with 98 made. He shot at a 39.2 percent clip, with his best performance from 3-point range coming in his second game as a Colonel where he made 7-of-12 at Louisville.
Abilene Christian's Jaren Lewis was named student-athlete of the year after earning all-academic for the third time in his career. The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member universities, voted for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.\
CoSIDA Academic All-District/All-American selections and First Team All-Conference athletes who meet all-academic nomination criteria are automatically named First Team All-Academic.
