Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Following a late-inning loss in the opener Friday, the Nicholls State University baseball team returned the favor against New Orleans as a
Brady Bell sacrifice fly in the eighth lifted the Colonels to a 3-2 victory Saturday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Didier Field.
Nicholls not only evened the series against UNO (9-4, 1-1 SLC), but the Colonels climbed back to .500 (8-8, 1-1 SLC) by ending its five-game skid.
Like on Friday, the Colonel starting pitching was dominant early as
Jacob Bedevian tossed five innings of hitless ball before UNO finally got to him in the sixth. He totaled 6.0 innings with two earned runs on four hits.
Nicholls had eight hits in the win, receiving two each from
Dane Simon and Bell. Simon was credited with a rare infield triple in the fifth after his towering popup was lost by the catcher. Simon's effort on the base paths allowed him to slide into third after the ball landed. He then scored on a
Champ Davison sac fly for a 2-0 lead.
Austin France gave Nicholls the early advantage in the first with an RBI single. Davison singled ahead of him, stole second, and then scored on the hit.
UNO scored on a sac fly in the sixth, then tied it with a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
Zach Autin issued the walk with the bags full but limited the damage by getting a strikeout to end the inning.
The decisive eighth was set up on a one-out single by
Alec Paz. France then drew a walk and
Ethan Valdez slapped a single to right center to load the bases. Bell gave Nicholls the lead on a fly ball to right.
Peter Holland pitched a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.
ON DECK
Nicholls and UNO will close out the series at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Did.
