Clement, Landry named NFCA South All-Region

NFCA ALL-REGION TEAMS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the first time since 1996, the Nicholls State University softball team had multiple selections make all-region as seniors Kali Clement and Megan Landry were named to the 2019 NFCA South All-Region Teams, announced Thursday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Clement was voted to second team at catcher, while Landry garnered third-team pitcher for the second consecutive season. Both Clement and Landry were named All-Southland First Team this season and were selected Southland All-Tournament, helping the Colonels to their third runner-up in the postseason in as many years.

A native of Thibodaux, Clement led Nicholls with a .369 batting average which ranked third in the Southland Conference. She also finished in the top 5 of the SLC in walks (28), slugging percentage (.589) and on-base percentage (.474). Her walk total was one shy of tying the single-season program record.

In her second season with the Red and Gray, the 2018 Southland Newcomer of the Year totaled 52 hits with nine doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 22 RBIs. Clement started 52 of 55 games played, primarily serving as the catcher for the SLC's top pitching staff. Behind the plate, she threw out 13 base runners attempting to steal.

Landry repeated as all-region third team after her second straight 20-win season. She finished the year ranked ninth in the NCAA in victories with a 27-12 record in the circle, and was 42nd in ERA at 1.62. Landry also ranked 12th in the nation in shutouts (10), 50th in strikeouts (183) and eighth in fewest walks per seven innings (0.90). Three of her shutouts came against teams competing in the NCAA Tournament - Houston, Southern Illinois, and Sam Houston State.

In her senior campaign, Landry was the workhorse for the Colonels with the second-most innings pitched in the NCAA with 250. A three-time Southland Pitcher of the Week, the Pierre Part native had three two-hitters and two one-hitters. Two of her performances were in shutouts against Houston and Pitt, and in her one-hit victory over the Southland champion Bearkats, Sam Houston had just a lone bunt single.

For their careers, Clement leaves Nicholls ranked eighth all-time in batting average at .343 and third in slugging (.557). With her shutout victory over Northwestern State in the SLC Tournament, Landry became the program's all-time leader in victories and set the new mark at 80 following her win over McNeese.

The duo was part of an outstanding 2019 Senior Class that led Nicholls to the Southland Tournament in four consecutive seasons - a first in program history. Along with winning the 2018 regular season title, the Colonels earned a bye in the postseason all four years with three No. 2 seeds and one No. 1.
