Nicholls places 83 on 2019 Spring Southland Commissioner's List

Nicholls State University Athletics had a total of 83 student-athletes recognized by the Southland Conference as the league office announced Thursday its 2019 Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll.

The Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll recognizes Southland student-athletes within the sports of baseball, basketball, golf, softball, tennis and track & field who maintain at least a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) within the semester of their sport's championship. Of the 83 Colonels named to the list, 22 posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring semester.

Colonel Softball led the way with 22 honorees, tying McNeese for the most softball student-athletes in the Southland. Included were Southland All-Academic selections Kali Clement, Amanda Gianelloni, Emma Holland, and Megan Landry. Nine players had 4.0 GPAs in the semester - Gianelloni, Holland, Landry, Allie Amerson, Brianna Clifton, Samantha Dares, Skylar Hamilton, Kennedy Hebert, and Kelsey Miller.

Baseball had 17 student-athletes named to the honor roll, highlighted by all-academic selections Jacob Bedevian and Dane Simon. An academic all-district recipient, Simon was one of four Colonels with a 4.0 GPA. He was joined by Brady Bell, Austin Bollinger, and Lucas Hatch.

Women's Basketball nearly had its entire roster with nine honorees, including two-time Southland Student-Athlete of the Year Cassidy Barrios. Mid-year transfer Kacie Fountain represented the team with a 4.0 GPA.

Women's Track and Field was next with eight honorees, highlighted by 4.0s from Julia Garcia Verges, Haley Gregoire, and Callie Scull. Men's Tennis also had eight with Nestor Giribet Lopez and Tobias Lentz with 4.0s.

Women's Tennis and Men's Track and Field each had six on the honor roll. Former Southland Student-Athlete of the Year Stephanie Barnett had a 4.0 in graduate school, while Benjamin Cazayoux registered a perfect GPA for men's track.

Baker Stevenson had a 4.0 to led the four men's golf honorees, while Kevin Johnson had a 3.77 to highlight three Colonel men's basketball players on the list.
