NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team received double-figure scoring efforts from
Chelsea Cain and
Adrian Mann in its season opener at Tulane, but the Green Wave grabbed a double-digit advantage early in the second quarter and never looked back as Nicholls fell, 88-43, Wednesday night in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Cain put up a career-high 16 points on 6-of-14 from the field, while Mann finished with 10 points and four rebounds, and three assists. As a team, Nicholls (0-1) shot 25.5 percent in the loss and was held to only four points in the third quarter.
Tulane (1-0) led 21-13 after a spirited start by the Colonels but went into the break leading 51-28. In the third, Cain was the lone Colonel to score in the quarter, hitting a field goal and a pair of free throws.
The Green Wave outscored Nicholls 23-4 in the period en route to their 16
th consecutive win in the series.
Jazmyn Womack scored seven points in her Colonel debut and had one of Nicholls' two 3-pointers.
Anna McKendree, also playing in her first game, had the other and was 1-of-2 from behind the arc.
Tulane's all-league forward Krystal Freeman paced the Wave with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Tulane shot 47 percent and outrebounded the Colonels, 54-24.
UP NEXT
Nicholls will make its Stopher Gymnasium debut on Wednesday, Dec. 2 against the University of Mobile. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
