Gordon captures SLC Player of the Week honors

FRISCO, Texas -- Monday afternoon, the Southland Conference announced Nicholls State University redshirt junior Ty Gordon as the league's 2020-21 debut Men's Basketball Player of the Week, a first for the Troy transfer and just the program's second weekly honor under third-year head coach Austin Claunch.

Despite dressing out for the Red & Gray for the first time in his collegiate career, the Tunica, Miss. native proved a more than capable addition to the Nicholls backcourt, leading the team on the scoreboard in both the UC Davis and Idaho State victories -- including a squad season-best 23 points in the opener -- while averaging a solid 5.0 assists throughout the three-game Bronco Invitational. The redshirt junior racked up his first three starts as a Colonel as well, setting the tone for a talented group of newcomers as Nicholls improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 1994-95 campaign.

Overall, Gordon orchestrated one of the best three-game performances of his young career, averaging 16.0 points behind an impressive shooting display, including a stellar 57 percent (17-of-30) from the field, 58 percent (7-of-12) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (8-of-10) at the charity stripe.

With the three-game Bronco Invitational wrapped up, the Colonels shift focus to the remaining pair of contests left on their Bay Area tour, initially challenging California on later Monday evening before making a quick turnaround for a Dec. 1 matchup at Saint Mary's.
