THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team will take on Alcorn State for its 2020 debut on Swanner Field at GeoSurfaces Park on Tuesday, Feb. 11. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Alcorn State (1-3) will be the first of three Tuesday games at Swanner Field in February for Nicholls, which went 14-4 at home in 2019. The Colonels have played the Lady Braves in each of the previous five seasons and have not lost to Alcorn in the all-time series.
Nicholls (0-5) dropped all five of its games over the weekend in Jacksonville, falling to host JU twice, San Diego State twice, and Villanova. The Colonels came out hot on offense with a combined 23 hits in the first two games, but cooled off and finished with a .250 average on the weekend.
Junior
Corynn Major totaled six hits and scored three times, and sophomore
Kennedy Hebert hit .357 with five hits, two homers, and three RBIs. Two of her homers were in the opening game against San Diego State, which finished the weekend 4-1.
While the team had early success at the plate, pitching was a struggle for the Red and Gray. Nicholls surrendered 25 hits on Friday and had another double-digit game Sunday when Villanova pounded out 13. Sophomore
Emily Danehower put in the most work, tossing 17.1 innings with nine strikeouts and a 4.44 ERA.
Alcorn began its season a day later on Saturday, playing Tennessee State and North Alabama twice each. The Lady Braves defeated TSU, 5-2, in their opener but went on to be outscored in the final three contests, 21-1.
Alcorn also had trouble on offense, hitting .148 as a squad in the four games. Desirea Lindsey led the way with a .375 average and three hits.
Ambria Dorsey earned the win and went 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA. She tossed a complete game against Tennessee State and struck out five.
