Final Stats 2 MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - The Nicholls State University softball team had a pair of strong performances in the circle as the Colonels picked up a split in the opening day of the Madeira Beach Tournament, defeating Purdue, 4-2, before dropping an eight-inning 2-1 game against Butler.
Emily Danehower (2-1) threw six shutout innings against Purdue (5-1) before the Boilermakers broke up the shutout with a 2-run homer with two down in the seventh. She finished with just two hits allowed in seven innings of work, with the first coming on a leadoff single in the fifth.
Nicholls (2-6) racked up eight hits in the victory with
Kennedy Hebert and
Bree Aguillard finishing with two each. The Colonels left the yard twice, including a 2-run homer by Hebert in the third.
Caitlin Garcia gave Nicholls an early 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single, scoring Hebert who doubled. Hebert then recorded her third home run of the season for a 3-0 lead in the third.
Samantha Dares followed with her second homer of the year to push the deficit to 4-0 in the fifth.
Danehower's no-hitter was broken up in the fifth but she still had her shutout intact with one out to go, but Alexa Binckes hit a 2-run home run for the Boilermakers. Danehower would end the game on a flyout.
For the second game,
Jordan Moon tossed all eight innings in the 2-1 extra-inning setback. No official stats were available.
