Track & Field secures new school record, 19 PRs at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- In yet-another record-setting weekend, the Nicholls State University track & field program continues to showcase major improvements meet-to-meet as the indoor season winds down to a close, wrapping up the Samford Bulldog Open with a season-high 19 new personal bests -- not to mention one new school record along with 11 others ranked inside the program's all-time top 10 performances -- at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

"Omo Oboh and Hailey Alcorn did an incredible job of leading our women's team this weekend," head coach Stefanie Slekis said. "In just her second meet competing in the 60m Hurdles, Oboh advanced to the finals to set a new school record of 8.67, which also currently ranks her third in the Southland Conference. Alcorn moved to third all-time for Nicholls and both her and Oboh rank in the Top 10 around the league. Oboh & Alcorn have done an amazing job this year as sophomores of buying into Coach Lord's training program and trusting the process and now they are seeing the benefits. I am excited for us to get back to compete at LSU in just six days after having almost everyone set a personal or seaosn bests this weekend as our final preparation for the conference championships in two weeks."

KEY STORYLINES & FINISHES
-- The Colonels secured 19 new personal marks while at the Samford Bulldog Open, including: Omo Oboh in both the 60m Hurdles (8.67) and 400m Dash (57.77); Troynae Walker in the 60m Hurdles (9.11); Chelsea Harrington in both the 60m Dash (7.85) and the 200m Dash (25.66); Kiara Bethley in the 60m Dash (7.91); Hailey Alcorn in both the 400m Dash (57.04) as well as the high jump (1.55m); Amiya Matthews in the 60m Hurdles (9.51), the high jump (1.50m) and the shot put (10.14m); Lara Reifers in the One-Mile Run (5:26.32); Donnell Adair in the 60m Dash (7.10); Jacob Janes in the 200m Dash (24.96); Cam Carter in the 800m Run (2:01.04); Jerrian Brown in the 800m Run (2:04.69); Hunter Batt in the One-Mile Run (4:44.84); Octavio Vasquez-Tilley in the 3000m Run (9:12.54); and Dustin Worley in the 5000m (16:17.77).
-- All together, 12 marks cracked the program's all-time top ten lists, including: Oboh, in just her second-ever opportunity in the 60m Hurdles, set a new school record; in the same event, Walker moved up to No. 5 on the all-time list; in the 400m Dash, Alcorn secured third all-time while Harrington picked up fourth in the 200m Dash; both Alcorn and Matthews climbed on the high jump list, notching seventh and ninth, respectively; meanwhile, both Harrington and Bethley picked up the fifth and 10th spots, respectively, in the 60m Dash; Elsa Rijpstra posted another solid long-distance showing, grabbing seventh in the 3000m Run; Faith Keter also composed a solid outing, sliding into 10th in the 5000m Run; Matthews continues to improve in the shot put, capturing eighth overall on the all-time list; and finally, the 4x400m Relay team of Oboh, Alcorn, Briana Land and Anginique Andrews moved up into a a tie for fourth all-time in the event.
