MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Nicholls State University softball team was unable to top a red-hot Eastern Kentucky squad in a 2-1 eight-inning loss to close out the Black and Gold Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Friday's matchup between the Colonel squads was similar, but Nicholls (10-13) was the one who rallied late with the game-tying run in the seventh. But Eastern Kentucky (17-3) used two sacrifices in the eighth to go on to claim its 13th straight win of the season.
Jordan Moon suffered the loss, pitching all eight innings with one earned run on four hits. Moon allowed a solo homer in the fifth by Vianni Berron, and the final run was unearned as each team started with a runner on second with the international tiebreaker in play.
While EKU was able to bring the runner home in their half of the eighth, Nicholls was retired in order by Mollie Paulick.
Corynn Major,
Yasmeen Williams,
Melise Gossen, and
Nikki Whitehead all had hits in the loss. Gossen doubled in the seventh which led to the game-tying run on Whitehead's single with one out. Pinch-runner
Mallery Marino scored on the play after EKU committed one of its four errors on the day, but Whitehead was left stranded on second.
