THIBODAUX, La. -- Powered by a handful of Top 10 individual performances across both the men's and women's squads, including an elite debut outing from transfer
Ceren Yilmaz, the Nicholls State University cross country program orchestrated an impressive overall display in the team's solo home competition of the 2021 campaign at the Nicholls XC Invitational, narrowly falling short of the meet championship on the women's side while the men sealed a solid third-place finish Saturday morning at the Manning Fields in Thibodaux, La.
On the women's side, Yilmaz made her presence felt in a memorable debut donning the Red & Gray, setting the pace throughout the meet en route to a first-place individual finish; meanwhile, fellow juniors
Elsa Rijpstra and
Myah Robichaux along with redshirt sophomore
Elaina Hansen each contributed significant performances in Yilmaz's wake, earning fourth, seventh and fifth, respectively, on the final leaderboard behind a trio of new personal records at the 5k distance. Junior Augusta Christensen rounded out the Colonels' scoring runners as she picked up a decent 19th, just topping the Red & Gray's back-up pair of junior
Summer Seal and senior
Emily Blanchard at 20th and 21st, respectively.

For the final team scoreboard, the women wrapped up the meet with 36 total points, good for second out of the five competing programs, as local challenger Tulane barely edged past via a final 33 points.
For the men, transfer
Randy Canady composed a hard-fought effort as the lone Top 10 finisher for the Colonels, battling for sixth overall -- missed out on fifth by less than a second -- as the redshirt sophomore notched a new personal best along the way. The remaining four scoring runners for Nicholls -- senior
Dustin Worley, junior
Preston Whisenhunt, senior
Miles Kanipe and sophomore
Alex Keller -- grouped up across a tight range from 12th to 22nd, keeping the Red & Gray within relative striking distance of fellow DI programs Southeastern and Tulane.
On the final team leaderboard, the men closed out the morning third in a field of five programs as the squad compiled 76 total points, concluding the meet trailing second-ranked Southeastern by 36 and champion Tulane by 43.
