Colonels notch consecutive wins with sweep at Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. - The Nicholls State University volleyball team swept rival Southeastern for its first victory in Hammond since 2012, taking down the Lady Lions, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23, Thursday night at the University Center. 

Nicholls (9-11, 2-6 SLC) had the upper hand most of the evening and had to fight off another relentless comeback by Southeastern (7-13, 5-3 SLC) in the second set. The Lady Lions grabbed the momentum in the second in last Thursday's come-from-behind win against the Colonels, but this time, Nicholls was able to claim the victory after letting a seven-point lead slip away. Trailing 23-22 in the decisive third set, the Colonels closed it out with three straight points to end a five-match drought against SLU.

KEY STORYLINES & STATISTICS
-- Aaliyah Burras had a big night at the net with five blocks to go along with nine kills and two aces. The senior had eight blocks in last Thursday's match against the Lady Lions.
-- Emily Gauthreaux paced the attack with 12 kills, hitting at a .182 clip. It marked her third consecutive outing with double-digit kills and fourth in the last five matches.
-- Lilly Bivens dished out 35 assists on 39 kills. The setter totaled just one kill, but it came after a long rally late in the second set to help the Colonels close out the three-point victory.  
-- Kylie Lockhart, the reigning Southland Defensive Player of the Week, had another strong showing with 22 digs. Kate Hoerdemann also finished in double figures with 12 digs, as did Kadie Becnel (11) and Bivens (10). 
-- The six-point win in the first set matched their largest margin of victory in conference this season. Nicholls took two sets last Saturday against Northwestern State, 25-19. 
-- The win at Hammond also ended a 17-match road skid for the Colonels, dating back to October of 2019. 
 

UP NEXT
Nicholls will continue its three-match road swing with two away contests next weekend.  The Red and Gray will have Saturday off before heading to Texas to battle A&M-Corpus Christi (Oct. 28) and UIW (Oct. 30).
