Colonels close '21 home slate with win over MVSU

THIBODAUX, La. - Five Colonels scored in double figures as the Nicholls State University men's basketball team never trailed against Mississippi Valley State, ending its 2021 home slate with a 104-73 victory Saturday afternoon on Broussard Court at Stopher Gymnasium. 

Fifth-year guard Ty Gordon continued his scoring prowess with his fifth consecutive 20-point outing, totaling 22 points on 7 of 12 shooting and 6 of 11 from 3-point range. As a team, Nicholls shot 60 percent from the field and connected on 14 of 28 from behind the arc. Pierce Spencer made 4 of 5 from deep and finished with 14 points, and Latrell Jones also scored 14 and hit a couple 3-pointers. 

Devante Carter and Manny Littles chipped in with 11 points each. The defense racked up eight blocks with Ryghe Lyons totaling three while adding seven rebounds. 

Nicholls never trailed in the game, jumping ahead 6-0 after 3s by Gordon and Jones. Mississippi Valley fell behind by as much as 15 in the first half, but (0-9) made it a 10-point game at the break at 48-38.

In the second half, the Colonels wasted no time in doubling their lead as Carter hit a jumper for a 63-42 advantage just 3:30 into the half. Then Nicholls made three 3-pointers -- one by Jones and two from Gordon -- to push the lead to 30. 

The Colonels had five dunks after the intermission, including a highlight one down the middle of the lane by Caleb Huffman. Mekhi Collins also slammed one down in the final 90 seconds to put Nicholls over 100 points for the third time this season. Collins finished with eight points and a team-high 9 rebounds.

Mississippi Valley was led by Robert Carpenter with 23 points. Nicholls held MVSU to 37 percent shooting for the game.

Nicholls will head to the Pacific Northwest to take on Oregon State on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 10 p.m. central.
