ITTA BENA, Miss. - Guard
Ty Gordon scored a career-high 28 and the Colonels racked up 55 in the opening half, as the Nicholls State University men's basketball team earned a 95-80 victory at Mississippi Valley Thursday night.
Gordon accounted for half of Nicholls' 12 made 3-pointer in the victory, connecting on 6 of 10 from long range. His 28 is the most for the Tunica, Mississippi native as a Colonel and it matched his career best which came in 2020 when he played for Troy. He was one of four Colonels to score in double figures, joined by
Pierce Spencer and
Emmanuel Little with 12 points, and
Caleb Huffman had 11 after going 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Spencer flirted with a double-double with 10 rebounds and seven assists, while Huffman dished out six.
Nicholls (6-3) shot 59 percent from the field and a season-high 48 percent from 3-point range. The team also had its second-most assists of the season, handing out 22 of 38 made field goals.
Despite the double-figure margin of victory, the Colonels started slow and found themselves trailing 18-14 after seven minutes. But an old-fashioned three-point play by Spencer gave Nicholls the lead at 19-18 and Huffman and Gordon followed with 3-balls to fuel a 12-0 run for a 26-18 advantage. Nicholls stayed red hot and made seven 3-pointers before the break, going into halftime with a 55-33 lead.
Mississippi Valley (0-7) outscored the Colonels in the second half, but never came closer than 13 points. MVSU was led by Robert Carpenter with 19 points and nine rebounds.
