FRISCO, Texas -- Monday afternoon, the Southland Conference announced Nicholls State University redshirt junior Najee Garvin as the league's Men's Basketball Player of the Week, a career-first for the Charlotte transfer as well as the program's third weekly honor of the 2020-21 campaign.
After enduring a season full of close calls for numerous personal records, Garvin finally managed to unburden himself of two particularly bothersome shortcomings on his collegiate résumé, initially registering his first-ever double-double -- a low-key 11-point/10-rebound outing -- in Wednesday's evening's victory over Lamar before breaching both the 20- and 30-point plateaus in a career-best scoring performance Saturday night at rival Southeastern Louisiana.
Notably, the South Carolina native shouldered the Red & Gray offense throughout a majority of the eventual 86-84 overtime win over the Lions, battling his way to a 30 points entirely within regulation and completely upending his previous personal mark (19 pts) in the process; Garvin also notched new career-bests in both field goals made (12) and attempted (20) while pacing the team on the glass with seven boards as well.
For the week, the redshirt junior averaged 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds across the two-game stretch, shooting a competitive 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from the field along with a strong 75.0 percent (9-of-12) at the charity stripe.
