THIBODAUX, La. – Following a tough loss in Friday's nightcap of their home doubleheader debut, the Nicholls State University softball suffered its second and third consecutive setbacks at Swanner Field as HBU took Saturday's double feature, 9-4 and 5-2.
HBU, which was seeing its first action of the season, led 9-1 in the first matchup and threatened to run rule before the Colonels scored three unearned runs in the fifth. Two of the runs scored on a
Scout Blades single.
Nicholls had six hits in the loss, getting two each from
Kennedy Hebert and
Ashlyn Reavis.
Jordan Moon took the loss, allowing one earned run in 6.2 innings. HBU took advantage of an extra at-bat via a Colonel error in the fifth, resulting in a Riley Bullen 3-run homer.
In the second contest,
Emma Holland delivered a run-scoring double in the fifth to cut the HBU lead to 2-1, but the Huskies answered with three runs in the sixth. Nicholls pieced together a rally in the bottom half, scoring on a
Skylar Hamilton single. However, HBU limited any further damage by getting a popup with the bases loaded to end the threat.
Hebert added a single in the seventh but was left on base as HBU earned the sweep. She totaled two of the Colonels' nine hits in the loss.
Alexis LaBure (2-1) issued seven walks in 5.2 innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits.
HBU was led on offense by Bullen and Shelby Echols with two hits apiece.
