THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team posted another comeback effort in the second half, but this time, the opposition was able to weather the storm as the Colonels dropped a 64-59 contest Wednesday evening in Stopher Gymnasium.
Like in Monday's win at Northwestern State, Nicholls (8-13, 7-7 SLC) erased a second half double-figure deficit by outscoring the Huskies, 23-13, in the third. A 19-4 run gave the Colonels a brief lead before HBU headed into the final quarter ahead by two and it would never relinquish the advantage.
Sophomore
Chelsea Cain scored a team-high 15 points to go along with nine rebounds, but it was the play of classmate
Terris McKay who sparked the third-quarter rally. Her jumper at the 7:17 mark started the run and she totaled 10 of the 19 points. McKay had a basket-and-one and a wild layup, then tied the score at 42-all after an
Anna McKendree steal.
But Timia Jefferson came up big for the visitors. She broke away for a layup before the end of the quarter for a 2-point lead and then hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth to push the advantage to eight. She and teammate Patience Idoko finished with a game-high 17 points.
Nicholls put together one last rally, making it a 57-55 game on a Cain bucket with 2:50 remaining. HBU countered with a 3-pointer from Kennedy Wilson and went on to add five free throws to hang on for the win.
Adrian Mann had 13 points and
Bryanna Washington added eigth points for the Colonels, which were swept in the season series for the first time against HBU. Nicholls had won seven straight before falling earlier this season in Houston.
