Colonel Tennis makes return to courts at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The return of Nicholls State University tennis started a day earlier as potential bad weather moved the women's/men's matches at South Alabama to Tuesday, and both teams came up short in a 6-1 decision at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

Despite playing for the first time in 11 months, Antoine Martin-Thiriat continued his strong singles play with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-6), 6-4 win over Philip Bosman at No. 6 singles. Martin-Thiriat posted a 6-1 mark in singles in the shortened 2020 season.

On the women's side, freshman Nuria Martin Lopez earned a straight-set win in her Colonel debut over Caraline Scheufler, 6-4, 3-0.

"We stood tall against two teams that are perennially on top of their conference year-after-year," said Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "I was excited about the competitiveness in our first match out of the box in 11 months. Again, I was extremely proud, and it was a lot to build on."

In doubles play, the duo of Piyush Surendra Salekar and Pavle Drobnjakovic earned a 6-4 win on the No. 2 line.

In defeat, Antonio Sasso lasted three sets in his Colonel debut. For the women, Simona Maksimovic battled Yu Fujioka on the top court in three sets, while Laura Lopez came up just short in a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) loss at No. 2.
