LaBure tosses shutout vs. McNeese as Nicholls splits doubleheader

THIBODAUX, La. – Playing in her final series at Swanner Field, senior Alexis LaBure notched a shutout to lead the Nicholls State University softball team to a 1-0 victory against McNeese after the Colonels dropped the opening game, 6-2, on Friday evening.

The Colonels (12-27, 5-21 SLC) will wrap up the season on Saturday against the Cowgirls for Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the Senior Day ceremony will take place following the game.

LaBure, who is one of the seven seniors playing in their final weekend in Thibodaux, tossed all seven innings in the nightcap victory, striking out one while allowing just four hits. Kennedy Hebert gave her all the run support that would be needed with an RBI single in the first inning.

Hebert was perfect at the plate in the win, going 3-for-3 with a double. The double was nearly her first home run of the season after she blasted a pitch off the top of the fence in the fourth inning.

Senior Caitlin Garcia had two hits and had the second one of the Colonels' three-hit frame in the first against McNeese's Jenna Edwards. Ashlyn Reavis started the two-out rally with a single before Hebert slapped a base hit to right for the 1-0 advantage.

LaBure faced the minimum in the third and fourth innings and got some help from her defense in the sixth after a double play wiped out a walk. In the seventh, she surrendered a two-out single before getting a groundout to second to end the game.

In the first contest, McNeese led 4-0 after four innings before going on to secure the 6-2 win.

Nicholls pieced together a 2-run rally in the fifth thanks to an RBI groundout by senior Skylar Hamilton and a run-scoring single by Garcia. But the Cowgirls got the two runs back in the seventh to make the final.

Freshmen Reavis and Lulu Vazquez each had two hits for the Colonels against Whitney Tate, who allowed two unearned runs while scattering eight hits in the complete game.

Four hitters accounted for two hits each for McNeese, led by Haylee Brinlee with two doubles and two RBIs. Taryn Westbrook took the loss with 10 hits allowed in 6.1 innings.
