HOUSTON, Texas – With nearly every starter returning from the spring season just a few months ago, the Nicholls State University football team is expected to compete for a third Southland Conference championship in the last four seasons as the Colonels were one of two teams to garner a first-place vote in the 2021 Preseason Poll released at the annual Southland Football Media Day, held at the Hilton Houston Post Oak on Thursday.
Nicholls placed second in the poll with 43 total points and had four first-place votes. Southeastern took the top spot with 48 points and received the remaining eight top votes. The Colonels and Lions will square off twice this fall with six conference members competing for the 2021 SLC crown.
The rest of the poll consisted of UIW (32), McNeese (26), Northwestern State (21) and HBU (10).
