TROY, Ala. -- Despite a physical defensive effort throughout, the Nicholls State University women's soccer program (0-1-0, 0-0-0 SLC) came up short in the season kickoff at regional opponent Troy (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Sun Belt), surrendering a penalty kick to the Trojans with just over 20 minutes remaining en route to a 1-0 decision at the Troy Soccer Complex in Troy, Ala.
KEY STORYLINES & STATISTICS
-- The Red & Gray defensive front handled a consistent offensive showcase from Troy, as the tournament host posted combined 17 shots for the evening with nine registered in the opening period and eight coming in the second half. All-in-all, a grand total 13 threatened the net with the Colonels saving, blocking or deflecting all but one.
-- Between the pipes, sophomore
Reagan Carter put together a solid effort as she logged her 12th complete match for the Colonels, collecting eight total saves while only allowing the 69' penalty kick.
-- Offensively, the Red & Gray found scarce opportunities to put pressure on the Trojans, finishing the contest with seven shots, two of which came on frame. Notably, however, the Nicholls attack relied on no central figure, as seven different Colonels notched a shot during the match.
-- On the night, four Colonels --
Reece Wortmann,
Lauren Andre,
Madeline Friedman &
Trinity Pagel -- made their collegiate debuts while a pair of transfers --
Kaitlyn Poirrier &
Hannah Brien -- notched their Nicholls debut.
