THIBODAUX, La. - Chelsea Cain turned in a double-double for the Nicholls State University women's basketball team with a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds, but Northwestern State was able to sneak away late with a 68-64 victory Thursday night in Stopher Gymnasium.
The game was knotted at 60-all with just over two minutes remaining before the Lady Demons got a huge bucket-and-one from Jordon Todd for her only points of the game. Nicholls (3-10, 1-1 SLC) answered with a Cain free throw but the Colonels were called for a flagrant foul on the rebound, leading to three made free throws for NSU. The Lady Demons added two more at the stripe before Cain sank a 3-pointer before the buzzer to make the final.
With the loss, Nicholls suffered its third setback at home this season while Northwestern State (8-5, 1-1 SLC) ended its three-game skid in the series against the Colonels.
Both teams finished under 40 percent from the field and it wasn't until the final quarter that each scored 20 points in a period. Cain's 28 came on 10 of 21 from the field and she also sank a career-high three 3-pointers on five attempts.
Bryanna Washington played all 40 minutes and scored nine points, while
Chyna Allen and
Deonna Brister added seven each.
NSU was led by Candice Parramore with 21 points and Monette Bolden chipped in with 16.
