THIBODAUX, La. -- In four sets, the Nicholls State University volleyball team (4-14, 1-5 SLC) was defeated by Northwestern State (11-7, 4-3 SLC).
In the first set, the Colonels jumped out to an 8-2 advantage before the Lady Demons eventually made the score 12-12. After that Northwestern State used a four-point run to make the count 21-17 before they ran away with the set 25-21.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair that saw Nicholls earn six of the last seven points to win the set 25-19. Set three was like set two, but this time the Lady Demons scored five of the final eight points of the set to win it 25-21.
In the final set, Northwestern State jumped out to a 12-3 advantage before Nicholls responded with three separate runs. Two of the runs were worth three points and the third was a seven-point run to make the count 18-17 Colonels. Nicholls then followed that up with a four-point run to make the score 24-20. The Lady Demons then racked off six straight points to finish the set 26-24 to earn the 3-1 victory.
Statistically, the Red & Gray offense saw four individuals finish the contest with double-digit kills. Leading the way was sophomore outside hitter
Trinity Vinzant who recorded her fourth double-double posting 13 kills and a career-high 21 digs. Also picking up a double-double was senior outside hitter
Devon Bright who registered 10 kills and a team-high 22 digs to earn her fifth of the year. Vinzant and Bright also combined for five service aces. Senior outside hitter
Katie Jones and freshman middle blocker
Paris Dixon had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while senior middle blocker
S'mara Riley added nine to the offensive output.
The Colonel offense was paced nicely by setters senior
Lilly Bivens (25 assists), and sophomore
Kendall Battistella (23 assists). The Red & Gray defense saw contributions from all over the floor with sophomore libero
Kadie Becnel tallying 19 digs while Bivens added 11. The team also had 10 total block assists with Dixon claiming the bulk of them with five. Jones finished with two; Vinzant, Bright, and freshman outside hitter
Mackenzie Pryor each had one. Riley had the Colonels' lone solo block.
