HATTIESBURG, MS – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team hit the most 3-point field goals since the 2017 season to pick up an 84-74 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday in day two of the 35th Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Southern Miss.
Four Colonel starters accounted for 78 points and all 11 3-pointers in the record setting effort. Sophomore forward
Deonna Brister hit seven out of 11 field goals, including two triples to record her first career double-double finishing the contest with a career high 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Amelia Sandie stuffed the stat sheet with a career-high 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists. She was efficient with her scoring, hitting six of seven field goals, two of three from behind the arch, and six of nine from the charity stripe.
Also stuffing the stat sheet was junior guard
Kyla Hamilton, who registered 20 points, a career-high nine boards, and five assists. This is her fourth double-figure scoring output of the season, including her season-high 21-point outburst yesterday against USM. For her effort in the two games, Hamilton was named to the 2022 All-Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic team.
Senior guard
Traya Bruce set the tone of the game by scoring eight of the first 11 points of the game and finishing the half with 16 points to help the Colonels jump out to a 48-36 lead at the half. Bruce hit the most 3-pointers (4) and finished the game with a career-high 18 points.
Overall, the Red & Gray shot 47.5 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from long range, hit eight more free throws (17-9) and held a 45-42 advantage on the glass.
The Devilettes had four individuals in double figures. Zaria Harleaux led the way with 17 and 17 rebounds. Kristen Hunt added 16 points, while Elisa Saffold and Zakiya Mahoney scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Kyla Hamilton was named to the All-Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic Team, averaging 20.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
