Final Stats 2 HAMMOND, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team picked up a split on Saturday in Day 2 of the Lion Classic at North Oak Park, defeating Alabama A&M, 7-3, before falling in five inning against SEMO, 13-5.
The Colonels (1-2) will wrap up the weekend with a Sunday rematch against SEMO. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
GAME 1 - Nicholls 7, Alabama A&M 3
A five-run fifth inning lifted the Colonels to head coach
Justin Lewis' first career victory.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Nicholls hit for the cycle in the frame, scoring on a
Danielle Duplay single, a
Lulu Vazquez triple, a double by
Melise Gossen and a two-run home run off the bat of
Syndee Shelton.Â
Julia Kramer added an RBI single in the sixth to make the final.
Nicholls pounded out 12 hits while the pitching staff limited Alabama A&M to just three.
Brittney Turner tossed five innings with two earned runs on two hits and struck out three.
Taryn Westbrook picked up the save, allowing a lone hit in 2.0 innings.Â
Melise Gossen finished 3 for 3 at the plate and homered in the fourth. Shelton, Kramer, and Duplay had two hits each.Â
GAME 2 - SEM 13, Nicholls 5 (5)
SEMOÂ scored 10 runs in the first inning on seven hits and went on to run-rule the Colonels in the first of two meetings set for this weekend.
Kramer drove in three runs in the loss, highlighted by a 2-run single in the third inning. Vazquez also added a run-scoring  double in the third.
Westbrook took the loss, lasting 0.2 innings with seven earned runs on four hits and three walks.
Paris Lehman added 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two earned on three hits and
Kennedy Hebert threw 2.0 innings and gave up two runs.Â
SEMO's big inning was fueled by a bases clearing double by Kat Sackett. Jillian Anderson drove in two on a double in her second at bat of the first inning.
