Mizzou picks up consecutive run-rule win over Colonels

THIBODAUX, La. - The Missouri Tigers broke open the game with a combined 10 runs in the sixth and seventh innings against the Nicholls State University baseball team as the Colonels fell by run-rule for the second straight game, falling 14-2 in seven innings Saturday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Didier Field.

Nicholls (0-2) trailed 4-2 through five innings before a two-out error extended each of the decisive frames. Missouri (2-0) scored four in the sixth as a result and put the run-rule into play with six run in the seventh. The Colonels weren't able to trim the lead as they fell to 0-2 at home.

Xane Washington led the Colonel offense with two hits, including a solo homer in the second inning. But it came after the Tigers scored four runs in the top half to take an early lead.

The Colonels cut the deficit in half on an RBI double by Austin Cain in the third. But Cain had a throwing error in the sixth that allowed Mizzou to push its lead to 8-2. Then after going up 10-2, he had another miscue and the Tigers added four more runs.

Tyler Theriot (0-1) suffered the loss, striking out six batters while allowing two earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings. A pair of errors in the second helped fuel Missouri's four-run inning.

Austin Troesser picked up the win, also striking out six with two earned on three hits in 4.0 innings. Carlos Peña and Ross Lovich had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers.
