NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team fell behind by 10 in the first quarter at Northwestern State and the lead stayed in double figures the rest of the game, as the Colonels dropped their fifth consecutive game with a 59-53 loss Thursday night at Prather Coliseum.
With the loss, Nicholls (4-18, 2-9 SLC) was swept in the two-game series against Northwestern State for the first time since 2011. The Lady Demons improved to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in conference.
Although the Colonels shot 35Â percent or less from the field for the third straight game,
Chelsea Cain and
Lauryn Bowie turned in strong performances on the offensive end. Cain scored a game-high 25 points helped by a career-high 3 of 5 night from 3-pointer range. Bowie notched a season-high 18 points on 6 of 8 from the field. They were the lone Colonels to score in double figures with
Chyna Allen adding eight points and
Bryanna Washington finished with six.
The early offensive struggles continued Thursday evening as Nicholls scored just eight points in the first quarter to fall behind by 10. The Lady Demons extended their advantage with a 24-point second quarter, going up 42-24 at the half.
The Colonels picked it up offensively after the intermission. Despite falling behind by as much as 21 in the half, Nicholls outscored NSU in both quarters and cut the deficit to 11 with 3:30 remaining. But the Lady Demons answered with a Jamiya Braxton 3-pointer on the next possession as they went on to sweep the season series.
Northwestern State had 21 turnovers but shot 51 percent from the field and 8 of 19 from 3-point range. The Lady Demons also dominated on the glass with a 45-25 rebounding margin, and that led to a 17-0 advantage in second chance points. NSU had five players score in double figures, led by Candice Parramore with 23 points.
