AUSTIN, Texas - After suffering its worst loss of the season, the Nicholls State University softball team bounced back the next day with a win against the same opponent by taking down Drake, 9-2, before falling to No. 23 Texas in five innings, 9-0, on Saturday to wrap up the Bevo Classic.
Nicholls (8-16) finishes the weekend with a 1-3 record. The Colonels were scheduled to play Minnesota again on Sunday but the game was canceled due to weather shifting the weekend schedule.
Game 1 -- Nicholls 9, Drake 2
The Colonels built a 9-0 lead against Drake and received a strong outing in the circle by
Brittney Turner to avenge an 18-run loss Friday.Â
Nicholls cranked out 13 hits and scored at least two runs in the third through sixth innings. Drake prevented the shutout with two in the sixth but
Paris Lehman came in and retired all five batters to secure the win.
Alexa Poche' had a big day at the plate, racking up four RBIs and was one of four Colonels to have at least two hits.
Danielle Duplay posted a perfect day, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and reached on a walk. The duo also each had a double as five different players recorded one in the victory.Â
Poche' started the scoring in the third with a 2-run single.
Kennedy Hebert followed with an RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
After Duplay doubled in two more runs in the fourth, Nicholls pushed its lead to 7-0 in the fifth. A run scored on a
Samantha Gwiazda single, then Shelton delivered a run-scoring double.
Poche' put the run-rule into play with a 2-run double in the top of the sixth, but Drake pushed two runs across in the bottom half. Lehman took over with runners on second and third with one out, allowing a sacrifice fly en route to her five consecutive outs.
Game 2 -- No. 23 Texas 9, Nicholls 0 (5 innings)
The host Longhorns put up eight runs in the second inning to cruise to a 9-0 run-rule victory.Â
The Colonels were limited to three hits in the loss, led by
Melise Gossen with a double. Duplay and Poche' each singled in the third but Nicholls was unable to manufacture a run.
Courtney Day led Texas with two homers in the decisive second inning. Sophia Simpson picked up the win with seven strikeouts in four innings.
Taryn Westbrook took the loss for the Colonels, allowing four earned runs in 1.2 innings.Â
