Colonels take Southland opener against SLU, 5-2

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team rallied back from a lopsided doubles point to win five straight singles matches, defeating Southeastern in the Southland Conference opener Saturday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

The win improved the Colonels' record to 9-5 overall, 1-0 in league play, and 7-1 at home. The Lady Lions fell to 1-12 and 0-2.

Nicholls had a slow start as SLU dominated the completed doubles matches, winning 6-1 and 6-0 on the top two courts. Morgan Forshag / Sophia Sara Safarova were tied at 4-4 at No. 3 when the match was clinched.

But the Colonels returned the favor in singles winning all five in straight sets. Laura Lopez allowed just a lone point on Line 4 before Carla Bouygues put Nicholls ahead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

Jessie Mount followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 before Constanza Cruz secured the team win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on Line 6.

Safarova claimed the final point with a straight-set win at No. 2. SLU's Putri Insani won the lone singles point for the Lady Lions with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Simona Maksimovic.Â
