HOUSTON - After being limited to three hits and no runs through the first 13 innings of Friday's doubleheader at HBU, the Nicholls State University softball team rallied late with two home runs in the seventh but could not complete the comeback in Game 2, as the Colonels fell 1-0 and 6-5 to the Huskies in Southland Conference play.
The setbacks add to a list of tough road conference losses for the Colonels (11-33, 3-11 SLC) as five of their six defeats have been by a single run. Nicholls and HBU (14-26, 4-12 SLC) wrap up the series on Saturday at noon.
GAME 1 - HBU 1, Nicholls 0
A pair of base hits to lead off the fourth resulted in the lone run of the game for the Huskies as the Colonels fell 1-0 in the opening game of the series.
Coming off a complete game victory last Saturday,
Brittney Turner was just as impressive as she went the distance again, allowing five hits in 6.0 innings of work. But unlike last weekend, Nicholls could not come up with enough offense for the win.
Kennedy Hebert,
Sadie Wells and
Julia Kramer all singled against Lyndie Swanson but she went on to earn the shutout win. She struck out four and walked one in seven innings.
Caitlyn Brockway led HBU with a 3-for-3 day and scored the only run.
GAME 2 - HBU 6, Nicholls 5
Down 6-0 in the seventh and facing a no-hitter, the Colonel bats caught fire with six hits including two homers, but the rally came up short as they were handed a doubleheader sweep for the fifth weekend in a row.
Alexa' Poche broke up the no-hit bid by Madison Cotton to lead off the final inning and
Julia Kramer ended the shutout with a 3-run home run. Following a single by Texas native
Lulu Vazquez,
Samantha Gwiazda fouled off four pitches before blasting a 2-run shot over the left center wall to make it 6-5.Â
Still with only one out,
Syndee Shelton pinch hit for a single to put the tying runner on. But
Jacey Meade subbed in and was caught stealing before
Danielle Duplay flied out to end the game.
Paris Lehman suffered the loss with two earned runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings.Â
HBU scored its first run thanks to a Colonel error in the second. The league's top hitter, Shelby Echols, then made it 2-0 with an RBI double in the fourth.Â
The Huskies extended their lead in the fifth with a three-run frame. Another error started the scoring, HBU made it 5-0 with two sacrifice flies.Â
Before the Colonels' late rally, Cotton only allowed a runner to reach in the third on a hit-by-pitch and another on a walk in the fifth. She left the game after the second homer and Swanson picked up the save.Â
