HOUSTON - Brittney Turner and Parish Lehman teamed up for seven shutout innings as the Nicholls State University softball team defeated HBU, 1-0, in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
For the second Saturday in a row, Turner (7-14) had an impressive start with five scoreless innings and Lehman finished off the Huskies for her second save of the season. Nicholls (12-33, 4-11 SLC) scored the lone run of the game on an error in the fifth inning.
The Colonels took the lead thanks to a two-out rally in the frame.
Syndee Shelton singled for one of the Red and Gray's three hits on the day to start it off, and pinch runner
Jacey Meade moved into scoring position with a stolen base.
Maya Zavala followed with a chopper to third that deflected off Haylie Savage's glove, and Meade was able to score from second.
Turner kept HBU (13-26, 3-14 SLC) hitless through three innings but had to fight to preserve the shutout in the next two frames. The Huskies recorded three singles in the fourth to load the bases before she forced a fly out to end the threat. In the fifth, HBU had two more singles and an intentional walk to fill the bags again, but Shelton was able to chase down a popup in foul territory near first base for the third out.
Lehman finished off the shutout with two hitless innings. After tossing a perfect sixth, she hit the leadoff batter to start the seventh. Lehman forced a lineout for the first out, struck out the next batter, then another liner to second ended the game.
