HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Nicholls State University beach volleyball program notched its first victory of the 2022 campaign as the Sandy Colonels defeated Huntingdon College, 4-1, to wrap up the Southern Miss Beach Invitational Saturday night at the Southern Miss Beach Volleyball Complex.
Nicholls (1-19) not only won its first decision of the season, but nearly picked up a clean sweep as the lone loss came in three sets on Court 5. The Colonels won Courts 1-4 all in two sets.
Aspen Steele and
Kate Hoerdemann started things off with a 21-11, 21-15 victory at 4.
Katie Jones and
Kennedi Steele followed with a 21-12 win in the opening set at 3, then cruised to a 21-7 triumph in the second.
On the top court,
Kylie Lockhart and
Emily Gauthreaux secured the team win with a hard-fought 21-19, 21-19 victory. The duo of
Devon Bright and
Kadie Becnel finished the night with a 22-20, 21-9 win at 2.
In the other three matches, Nicholls fell 5-0 against Spring Hill College, host Southern Miss, and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Kennedi Steele and Jones won in their first set against Spring Hill while Lockhart/Gauthreaux took their opening set against Kingsville.
The team victory was the second for Nicholls in team history. Started in 2019, the beach program went winless in its first season before securing the first win in 2020 against Eastern Kentucky. That season was cut short due to COVID-19 and the team did not compete in 2021.

Nicholls will have the next weekend off before heading to Baton Rouge for LSU's Battle on the Bayou on Friday, April 15-16.
