McNeese takes Friday DH over Colonels

THIBODAUX, La. - With both team looking to secure their postseason position in next week's Southland Conference Tournament, the Nicholls State University softball team's fate still remained unclear while McNeese clinched the No. 1 seed with a doubleheader sweep of the Colonels, winning 3-1 and 7-0 Friday evening at Swanner Field.

A win for Nicholls (12-35, 4-13 SLC) on Senior Day Saturday would results in the No. 5 or 6 seed, depending on UIW's finale. A loss to McNeese (33-19, 14-3 SLC) would put Nicholls at No. 7. Although the Cowgirls are guaranteed the top seed, they will be going for an outright regular season title. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game 1 - McNeese 3, Nicholls 1

Paris Lehman put together a solid complete game against first-place McNeese, but the Colonels were unable to generate enough offense in a 3-1 loss to open the series.

The Cowgirls took advantage of an error in the first for their first run, then added two more in the second. Lehman (5-14) shut out the visitors the rest of the way, finishing with two earned runs allowed on eight hits. She walked two and struck out two.

McNeese returned the favor in the fourth with an error, resulting in an RBI single by Lulu Vazquez for the lone run allowed by Ashley Vallejo. With two on and two out, Vallejo ended the frame when Maya Zavala ripped a shot to the left-center gap and it was chased down by Kendall Talley to keep the lead at 3-1.

The Colonels never threatened again as Vallejo (15-7) finished off the complete game.

Danielle Duplay, Melise Gossen and Alexa Poche' had the other three hits for the Colonels.

Game 2 - McNeese 7, Nicholls 0

Unlike in Game 1, the Colonels kept McNeese off the scoreboard through two innings but a four-run third by the Cowgirls was more than enough for a doubleheader sweep.

Nicholls had eight hits in the loss; however, finished with seven runners left on base. Duplay turned in a two-hit night to lead the offense.

Brittney Turner pitched 6.2 innings for the Colonels, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits. Her counterpart, Whitney Tate, struck out five in her seven shutout innings.

Chrislyne Moreno had a stellar outing at the plate for McNeese with three hits, a triple, and two RBIs. She capped the big third inning for the Cowgirls with an RBI single.
