FRISCO, Texas - Senior
Kennedy Hebert was named Southland All-Academic for the third time for her career while
Melise Gossen and
Alexa Poche' were named to the second team, as the Southland Conference announced Wednesday morning its 2022 softball academic honors.
Hebert repeated as a first-team selection, which she garnered as a sophomore in 2020. She earned second-team recognition last season.
A graduate of Morgan City High School, Hebert graduated from Nicholls Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA as an accounting/finance double major. She was a three-time member of the Southland Commissioner's Honor Roll. On the field, Hebert was an All-Southland Third Team selection at outfield.
Gossen, who was also an All-Southland Third Team honoree, received her first academic all-league honor after posting a 3.74 GPA in health sciences - pre-professional. Gossen has been named to the SLC honor roll three times as well, and also earned her degree this spring. She led Nicholls with a .285 batting average and ranked third in the Southland with 15 doubles.
Poche' landed on the academic squad after recording a 3.84 GPA as a health sciences - health and wellness major. She also made the commissioner's honor roll in her first season in 2021. For the season, Poche' tied for fourth in the Southland with eight home runs and led the Colonels with 29 RBIs. She earned one hitter of the week in '22 after a big weekend in the Black & Gold Tournament at Alabama State.
Five members of the All-Academic first and second teams compiled perfect 4.0 GPAs, including Hebert. She was also one of eight repeat selections among the first and second teams, and one of just three three-time honorees.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection, and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests on the season, excluding pitchers.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the eight member schools, votes for the Student-Athlete of the Year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
