Catherwood Delivers Game Winner in 3-2 Victory Over Alcorn

THIBODAUX, La. - For the second time in 10 days, freshman Jemma Catherwood scored a late game-winning goal as the Nicholls State University women's soccer team defeated Alcorn, 3-2, Tuesday night at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

Nicholls (2-5-1) got off to a blazing fast start with first-half goals by Kaitlyn Poirrier and Koryn Barrett, but Alcorn (1-4-1) answered with two goals before halftime. Then in the 75th minute, Hannah Brien was fouled just outside the penalty box on the right side. Catherwood followed with a perfectly placed shot on the free kick for her second goal of the season.

The defense held Alcorn to a pair of off-target shots the rest of the way as redshirt freshman goalkeeper Megan Cook notched her first career victory.

Nicholls doubled up the visitors on shots, 12-6, and had a 7-3 advantage on shots on goal. The Colonels needed just 41 seconds to crack the scoring column when Rami Mitchell dished off a pass to Poirrier for her second career goal against the Lady Braves.

The Red and Gray then went ahead 2-0 in the 14th minute on Barrett's first goal of the season. Shelby Nickal sent a cross to Mitchell and the ball deflected to Barrett, who booted it past Paula Argelaguet to double the Colonel lead.

Alcorn then tied the score with a pair of quick goals. Audrey Williams scored in the 27th minute and Samara Nunn followed in the 30th minute with her second of the season.

In the second half, Catherwood subbed into the game in the 73rd and again provided the game-winner. Cathwerwood scored late in the Colonels' 1-0 win over Jackson State on Sept. 4.

Cook finished with one save in her second career start at goalkeeper. She also started in the 0-0 draw at Hawai'i Pacific.
