LAKE CHARLES, La. - For the first time in conference play, the Nicholls State University soccer team enjoyed a lead after scoring in the opening minutes at McNeese but the Cowgirls answered with three goals to hand the Colonels a 3-1 loss Friday night at Cowgirl Field.
With the setback, Nicholls dropped to 2-9-1 overall and 0-5 in the Southland Conference. The Colonels are still searching for their first league win since beating Stephen F. Austin in 2018. McNeese improved to 4-5-1, 2-2-1 SLC with its 11th consecutive win over the Colonels.
A fast start for Nicholls came thanks to a goal by
Avery Mondoux, the first of the freshman's career. Off of a
Anna Madsen throw in,
Rami Mitchell got the ball back to Madsen, who sent the ball into the box from 30 yards out. Mondoux was able to deflect the shot while shielding off the goalie for a fourth-minute goal.
It didn't take long for McNeese to even the score with an Anouk Linders goal in the 14th minute. Then in the 34th, Magalie Dépôt scored the first of two goals to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 advantage. She scored again in the second half to make the final.
Reagan Carter totaled two saves in 90 minutes at goalkeeper. Her counterpart, Jackie Kelly, finished with four saves after allowing the early goal. Kelly also saved a shot late in the game by
Hanah Gonzalez.
The Colonels were outshot 12-8 for the match but had a 5-4 advantage in the second half.
