COUSHATTA, La. - Nicholls State University men's basketball guard
Micah Thomas was named to the Preseason All-Southland Second Team as the league office announced its basketball preseason teams and polls on Media Day.
Thomas was the lone selection for the Colonels who received 71 points in the preseason poll, placing sixth out of the 10 teams. Nicholls finished fourth in the standings a year ago but had to replace five starters heading into
Tevon Saddler's debut season at the helm.
A native of Oklahoma City, Thomas logged 13 starts in his first season with the Colonels and averaged 8.4 points while dishing out 3.2 assists per game. He reached double figures in scoring in 10 games including 20 points in his debut at No. 17 Arizona. He finished with a .329 clip from 3-point range, making 27 from behind the arc, and missed just two free throws in 27 attempts (.926). Thomas was also outstanding in taking care of the ball, posting a 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio.
For the preseason poll, Southeastern and McNeese each tallied six first-place votes with SLU edging out the Cowboys for first place, 144-142. New Orleans received three first-place votes and came in at third (132), followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi which had five first-place votes and 124 points. The remaining teams were Northwestern State (84), Nicholls (71), Texas A&M-Commerce (66), HCU (50), Lamar (45) and UIW (42).
Nicholls will get its season underway in New Orleans on Monday, Nov. 6 at Tulane. Then on Friday, the Colonels will head to Baton Rouge to take on LSU.
Coach Saddler and the Colonels make their home debut on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Season tickets are available for purchase
