THIBODAUX, La. -- In front of more than 1,500 kids from the surrounding areas on Education Day, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team cruised to a 94-52 victory over Southern University of New Orleans inside a packed Stopher Gym.
The 3-0 start to the season is the best in program history and the Colonels have won their first two home games for the second consecutive season.
Additionally, this is the most points scored by the Colonels since the 97-86 victory over Northwestern State during the 2018-19 season.
In the first half, the Colonels played stout defense and forced 15 SUNO turnovers that led 28 points on the other end for Nicholls. The Red &Gray held a 22-point lead at the intermission (42-20).
The second half was a similar story as the Colonels finished the contest with 20 assists for the second time this season and won the turnover battle 13-25.
Also, for the second time this season the Red & Gray had five individuals that scored in double figures and every Colonel that checked into the game scored.
Senior guard
Ashley Malone hit seven of her nine field goals and led the way 16 points off the bench followed by senior point guard
Kyla Hamilton who had 13 points and five rebounds. Freshman guard
Britiya Curtis had 11 points, four assists, and two steals.
Sophomore forward
Lexi Alexander and junior forward
Deonna Brister had 10 points and three rebounds apiece. Brister had a team high 4 steals.
Freshman guard
Betzalys Delgado stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, six boards, and a team-high five assists.
Junior Vioette Skipworth and seniors
Traya Bruce and
Kate Manley each tallied six points, while
Daelyn Craig and
Adyson James added five and two points, respectively.

The Red & Gray will cross state lines for the first time to battle SMU on Tuesday, Nov. 14 and then return to the Boot to take on Louisiana on Saturday, Nov. 18.
