THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team was beaten 3-0 by New Orleans on Thursday night.
In the first set, the Colonels sprinted to a 17-12 lead after a UNO service error. The Privateers closed the set on a 13-5 run to win the set 25-22.
The Colonels were unable to slow down the Privateers attack in the second and third frames as they hit .294 and .533 to round their match hitting percentage at .409 compared to the Colonels' .209.
In the second set, the action was tied at 11 before UNO went on a 7-point scoring surge to build a cushion win the set 25-20.
The Privateers momentum was rolling into the third and they coasted to a 25-13 victory to secure the sweep.
The Colonels' attack was led by a trio of freshmen outside hitters.
Deniz Akgul led the way with 10 kills, while her classmates
Gracie Campbell and
Addison Phares had eight kills apiece.

Paris Dixon and freshman outside hitter
Autumn Perry had five kills apiece.
Junior setter
Kendall Battistella and freshman
Berra Soyler paced the offense with 18 and 16 assists, respectively. Junior libero
Rae Leano tallied a team-high 12 digs.
