THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team ended its losing streak in impressive fashion as the Colonels dominated Houston Christian for the entire game in a 64-46 victory Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Stopher Gymnasium.
After nearly knocking off Texas A&M-Commerce in the last home game, Nicholls held HCU scoreless for the opening six-plus minutes. The Colonels never trailed as they cruised for the 18-point victory.
The win snapped a 12-game skid for the Colonels (5-23, 2-15 SLC) and it was the first home win in league play since Senior Day of 2021. Nicholls also ended a five-game losing streak in the series against HCU (11-17, 6-11 SLC).
HCU was held to 22.5 percent from the field, which was the first time a Colonel opponent shot less than 25 percent since a win over New Orleans in 2014. Nicholls scored the game's first 12 points and led 19-5 after the first quarter as the Huskies were 2 of 16 from the field.
In the second quarter, Nicholls made 7 of 10 while HCU continued to struggle, hitting just 3 of 16. The Colonels held a commanding 35-16 lead at the break.
Following the intermission, HCU never came closer than 14 points.
Five Colonels finished in double figures, led by
Adrian Mann and
Kyla Hamilton with 15 points each.
Deonna Brister added 12 points and
Lexi Alexander and
Kate Manley scored 10 apiece. Brister and Hamilton totaled double-doubles with 13 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
The Colonels shot 44 percent from the field and were the same from behind the arc, making 4 of 9. Nicholls also took care of business at the free throw line, connecting on 12 of 14.
Enya Maguire paced HCU with a game-high 19 points, helped by five 3-pointers.
