MONROE, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team secured a series victory over ULM as the Colonels defeated the Warhawks, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.
With the win, Nicholls ups its record to 11-6 on the season and 3-3 on the road. ULM slips to 6-10 overall.
The Colonels totaled 10 hits in the victory which included a pair of home runs.
Wes Toups left the yard with a solo shot in the third for an early 1-0 lead and
Garrett Felix added a solo homer in the sixth for a 5-0 advantage. A three-run fourth was fueled by a 2-run double by
Kaden Amundson and an RBI single off the bat of
Jaden Collura.
Nursing a 5-0 lead,
Devin Desandro finally ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth and was charged with two runs after allowing three singles. He went on to earn the victory, scattering four hits while striking out two in 5.2 innings.
But Nicholls got both runs back in the seventh.
Erick Ordonez and Toups singled before
Xane Washington roped a base hit up the middle for two RBIs.
An error in the ninth allowed the final run to score for ULM.
Felix led Nicholls with three hits while Toups and Amundson each finished with two. Felix doubled in the three-run fourth as part of four straight hits for the Colonels. After going hitless in four straight games, Toups has put together a four-game hitting streak.
Nico Saltaformaggio threw 2.2 innings out of the pen, allowing three hits and striking out one.
Cade Evans picked up the save in 0.2 innings of work. The Colonel pitching staff allowed seven hits but none for extra bases.
Cole Cressend took the loss for ULM, surrendering five earned runs on six hits in 6.0 innings.

The Colonels will go for the sweep on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
