FRISCO, Texas - Nicholls State University guards
Caleb Huffman and
Latrell Jones were named first- and second-team, respectively, as the Southland Conference announced Friday its 2022-23 All-Southland Men's Basketball Teams and awards.
Huffman was also named to the five-member All-Defensive squad and was joined by teammate
Pierce Spencer.
A native of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Huffman emerged as the Colonels' leading scorer and ranked fifth in the Southland in scoring at 16.3 points per game. He was the only guard in the conference to shoot better than 50 percent from the field (.517) and he also made 59 3-pointers at a 40.4 percent clip. Huffman poured in 20 or more points in nine games this season, including scoring 31 and 32 in wins over Southeastern and UIW. He also scored 29 in the Colonels' home win over Northwestern State. For the season, Huffman had two double-doubles and was named Southland Player of the Week once.
Huffman was also one of the top defenders in the Southland, ranking 22nd in the NCAA with 2.1 steals per game. He had three or more steals in 10 different games to help the Colonels to a No. 4 ranking in the nation in steals per outing.
Jones earned all-conference for the second time in as many seasons, ranking 11th in the Southland in scoring at 14.6 points per game. He scored 20 or more points in seven games this season including four in conference. A native of New Orleans, Jones had 23 points in the home win over McNeese and drained the game-winning 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds at Texas A&M-Commerce. He collected two double-doubles in league play and was a two-time Southland Player of the Week. Jones also ranked among the leaders in the league in blocks (11th) and steals (9th).
A native of Porter, Texas, Spencer landed on All-Defensive after averaging 1.6 steals per game for the Colonels. He had two or more steals in 10 games this season as the Colonels averaged a league-best 9.7 per game. As a team, Nicholls ranked No. 1 in field goal percentage defense in the SLC, No. 2 in scoring defense and No. 3 in three-point percentage defense.
