CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After falling in the doubles point, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team stormed back in singles play to pick up a 4-1 victory over Bryant University in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament on Thursday morning.
Similar to the previous matchup against the Bulldogs, Nicholls (10-14) was unable to secure the early 1-0 advantage after falling in doubles. Bryant cruised to 6-1 and 6-3 wins on courts 2 and 1.
But in singles play, Nicholls did not drop a first set en route to four straight-set victories.
Carla Bouygues continued her dominant season with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Camila Baeza at No. 5 before
Simona Maksimovic put the Colonels ahead with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph against Sarah Hickey at No. 1.
The final completed matches were closer but the Red and Gray still came out on top.
Dareen Hassan edged Caitlyn Munson, 7-6, 6-3 right before
Constanza Cruz closed it out with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Olivia Rondini.Â
Sophia Sara Safarova's match went unfinished 6-4, 5-6 at No. 2 while
Laura Lopez was at 7-5, 3-2 on line 6.Â
Nicholls takes on top seed and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 10 a.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.
