Melise Gossen has been named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Gossen had a storybook Senior Weekend, batting .429 to lead the Colonels to a 4-0 week and their first series sweep of the season. The Rayne, Louisiana native had two doubles and a triple and drove in three in Friday's opening 6-0 win over HCU, then in the nightcap, she hit a walk-off single in extra innings.
On Senior Day with Nicholls trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Gossen sent the first pitch over the left field wall to force extras. Nicholls went on to win in the eighth for the second straight game to complete the sweep.
Gossen had a hit in all four games for the week, posting a .929 slugging percentage and five RBIs. The home run was her ninth of the season, moving her into a tie for first place in the Southland.
ON DECK
Nicholls will have next weekend off before heading to Lake Charles for the Southland Conference Tournament. The Colonels will be the No. 3 or 4 seed, depending on this weekend's results. The opening day of the tournament is Tuesday, May 9.
